RV Tales #3 – One More Day

The adventure is getting closer and closer. In one day, I’ll be on the road like Jack Kerouac, Ken Kesey, Willie Nelson and Randy Primm!

Who’s Randy you might ask? I’ll tell you more about him in a moment.

Anyhow, I finished up my second day of RV Orientation at Camping World. The folks at the San Marcos branch were just phenomenal. All of them. They couldn’t of been more helpful and patient with me.

We fixed the leaks in the plumbing system, got a new water filter and repaired the blown out hoses in the propane lines. I’m afraid of propane myself. I learned how to turn on my heat (yea) and how to get hot water into the shower (double yea). I’m pretty confident I can make it out on my own, but I may book another Camping World RV orientation in Oregon just for the hell of it. It’s only $49 and there is a branch about 10 blocks from my parents house.

So, the rig is pretty much ready to roll. The only major thing missing is a bad ass GPS system and satellite tv. I ended up getting one of those Mifi cards from Verizon for internet connections. Verizon by far has the best coverage across the country. Sadly, their internet plan blows like vampire toothed hooker.

For $59.99 you get 5G’s of transferable bandwidth. Being a video guy and all, I could suck that up in a day. If you go over the 5 G’s, you pay $50 per gigabyte of transfer. Talk about a rip off. Apparently the days of unlimited Verizon connections are gone. I’d pay good money to have one of those grandfathered accounts. So, it appears I’ll be stealing Wifi where I can along the way.

Everyone keeps asking… “Jason, where are you headed first”?

Here’s the sort of plan… Tuesday evening I’ll begin the trek north on Interstate 5 to Oregon. I figured I ought to spend some time with my folks for the holidays since I only see them about once a year. Then, I’ll head to Bothell Washington (just outside of Seattle) to see my biological father whom I’ve spent minimal time with in my life. From there, it’s open road.

I will be in Vegas around January 15th or so. And while there I’m really excited to meet up with a particular guy. His name is Randy Primm, aka “The Road Bandit“.

I somehow came across Randy’s site while perusing the net for crazy RV’ers. The moment I saw Randy’s videos I instantly dug the guy. “What a great idea” I thought to myself. I got hooked on his videos and proceeded to pretty much watch them all.

But then I got kind of bummed. Randy hadn’t been traveling much lately. Mostly due to financial woes. After seeing the enjoyment he had on the road, I imagined he was pretty bummed being holed up in his class C RV in Vegas parking lots.

So I had an idea…

We need to get this guy back on the road.

I noticed he had great video shooting and editing skills. Surely he could parlay that into some money on the road. Maybe I could help him out in some way? Maybe I could use a video guy like Randy on the road? I have been hinting at the idea of a RV gang. Or, maybe I could become a Road Bandit with Randy?

I’m not sure what is going to happen, but I’m very open to letting the universe provide me what is necessary on this adventure. Regardless of what happens, I know Randy and I can be an asset to each other. He has road experience, and I have hustling experience that can keep the gas tanks filled and the fridge stocked with grub and cold squeezers. It will be interesting to see what pans out. Either way, both of us are going to have some exciting times ahead.

So, instead of talking about this dude, why don’t I just share a video of his with you. It kind of breaks down the Road Bandit story. It’s entertaining, fun and inspiring. Inspiring enough for me to contact him and be willing to help him accomplish his goals. He seems like a great guy.

  1. Love the new blog design…much cleaner. So cool that you might get Randy on board. I can’t see how this could “not” come together for you. I think it’s a brilliant idea. I checked out his site after you first mentioned him and the dude is inspiring.

Hope you have a blast Jason! Sounds like one hell of an adventure lies ahead.

  2. Hi Jason,

I’ve been wondering about something and if it’s none of my business it’s all cool. Was wondering if you totally disconnected, like if you sold the house and went all hippy minimalist, or if this is like a sabbatical and you’ll be heading back to settle down in SoCal again after it’s over.

BTW, I admire what you’re doing here. It’s no small decision to set out on the open road for a year. I bet you’ll get a ton of inspiration from this and inspire a lot of people directly and indirectly with your travels.

  3. Hey J-Mo,

Regarding the Verizon Wi-Fi card, I’ve been looking into this problem for my trip as well.

From my phone conversation with one of the verizon reps, it appears that they only way around the 5GB bandwidth limit is to buy another card.

Then, when you’re close to your limit on one, you just swap it out with the other.

They’ve also got a 10GB plan, but it’s more expensive than just buying 2 different cards.

    Lame, I know.

Anyhow, just thought I’d clue you in on that because I’m currently fighting the same battle for my trip. I’ll be doing a ton of video stuff too… and it’s not going to take long to eat up 5GB.

  4. Hey Jason,

Corey here, I might not be in PDX when you pass through as I’m working on some stuff for a client up in Seattle, so I may be up there if you wanna grab a Dick’s (burger that is).

Either way man have a great drive up the 5!

    Corey

  5. Hey Mo,not sure what to say now that you’re headed out on the road.
Take lots of hippie food with ya if you can.Me I’ve never traveled
out west, but I think you’ll love the east.

Partyin’,internet marketing and RVin’ Mo,and meeting new friends
and getting back with old ones.Sounds like the trips I take in
the east with blues artists from time to time.

I’ll send you a video of myself in the new year which I’ve never
done.Anyway,I think your biz will expand and your friendships
    will grow deeper with people.

    Take care Mo.

  6. Have FUN! My hubby and I just got back from a 3 month roadtrip and it was coolest thing we’ve ever done!! What an adventure! Although next time we’re leaving the Corvette behind and opting for the RV (not as fast but much more room)!! 🙂 hehe Can’t wait to follow your journey!

ps – We have that verizon MiFi too and it worked pretty much EVERYWHERE in the country which was nice…the fees to use it = not so nice. I totally agree!

    Safe travels and fun adventures!
    Jenn

  7. McDonald’s Offering Free Wi-Fi Starting in January

McDonald’s doesn’t want you to just grab your grease bombs and go—they want you to stick around, have a coffee drink, and surf the web from your laptop or smartphone. That’s why they’re offering up free Wi-Fi, which previously cost $2.95 for two hours, at 11,000 of its 14,000 U.S. locations, starting in mid-January. The service comes through AT&T, and looks to be an escalation of the iconic burger chain’s attempt to lure some latte-and-laptops business away from Starbucks. That said, the messy use of both fries and keyboards will likely remain a challenge. [WSJ.com via Mashable]

  8. Awesome idea! Since I can’t drive, no can do for me. But my oldest boy has backpacked across Europe before he hit college and said it was an incredible experience.

Think about going bio since you’ve a diesel engine. Those things were originally made to run on stuff like that. I had a trucker friend try a split mix of bio and diesel – results: got almost twice the mileage and the engine ran like a dream. He’s looking into doing it more often by finding bio-fuel stations across the country.

Hope these may help if you’d like to try it and not only save $$ but go green too.
I get tired of all the political hoopla over the climate changes. You can see it happening, measure big changes & know it’s real while some ignore it and play ostrich, hoping it will just go away.

Personally, I don’t care who caused it or why it’s happening. I just know we need to do something about it. Too bad those greedy profiteers don’t realize they’d make more money working on a solution than continued raping of our resources. Maybe something would get done and more jobs would pop up. The economy could take a big lift if it would get some help pushing the technology and engineering sectors.

Hope that you have an amazing and safe journey.
Warm wishes to you for the season too.

  9. Hey J-Mo,

Have a great time out there on the road, man. Don’t let that blown tire ruin anything… take it all in (so Randy says).

Thanks for posting that video, it’s a freaking awesome way to look at life. I just finished college and put my notice in at work to solely take on the internet marketing world. I couldn’t stand that 9-5 job anymore, man!

Make some sweet videos with Randy… and I might run into you in Vegas.

    Peace,
    Joe

  10. Hi JMo,

I for one can’t wait for all the stories from your journey. For all of us that would just love to do what you are doing (but either don’t live in the US or can’t spare the time), the blog posts and videos will have to suffice.

    Good luck buddy,

    GuruBob

  11. hey Jason, Great video… Really glad to hear you say that you’re going to trust the universe to provide what you need, it’s the first step to a perfect trip! Hope your visit with your folks is great and especially the visit with bio-dad…

Looking forward to cooking for you (and Randy? and whoever else you pick up along the way… 😉 in Flagstaff! I know you’ll create an awesome experience!!!

  12. Hey Jason,

    Watched the Video

    ‘Wheeeeeee… Splash!”

    Loved that part.

I did 12,000 miles cross country road trip in 6 weeks after I got out of college with my brother and a friend from Germany. Saw the big national parks… before they got to crowded (this was a few years ago…)

Those memories have sustained me through long nights working my businesses, and their successes… and sometimes failures.

Jason, perhaps it’s none of my business, but Randy has something called Pyroluria. If you take ENOUGH of a certain active B6 vitamin plus some other nutrients, you end up becoming much more successful.

How do I know all this? Let’s just say that this is a info product I’m not done with yet.

Anyway, if Randy ends up having some quirks that disappoint you , just remember this strange of the wall email and drop me a line.

BTW, if you make it out to Colorado, and need a place to take a nice, long, hot, high pressure shower high up in the Rockies (almost within sight of the divide) AND talk Internet Marketing – again, drop me a line.

Wow, that was a long sentence… probably totally blew my readability score with that one.

Anyway, I can’t seem to write anything any more without including an offer.

Curse of the copywriter, I guess.

  13. I had a great day today! I washed my jeans. twice.
I had a fudge brownie in the pocket when I washed
them. It was a big O mess! Looked like I took a
dookie in them. Mama was POed, but hey what the
    heck…right???

    Well have lots of fun. I know I won’t. I am a
loser and a dweeb too. I need some help from a
good head man, but I has no insurance or money
to spare to get the needed help. I just sit and
plunk around all day. I drink a beer or two when
I get the chance. Daddy says I will have to move
out before my next birthday. I’ve lived here 36
years and now I got to go. I will miss all my
friends. I have a cat I will have to put to sleep
since I can’t afford the cat chow. That’s what I
will be eating. It’s not too bad if you get the
cans with gravey and lots of meat in them. I
like the puss n boots, it’s the best one I have
    eat.

Well got to go they are yelling at me to go
    the bus is here….

    bye

  14. Hi Jason,

And everyone thinks that operating and making RVs work is easy. I did too until reading about your ordeals.

The way you describe them I’m surprised how well you’ve handled them.
I’m not sure if I’d be able to do the same.

It’s good that you are on your way. Taking another RV camping course in Oregon sounds like a good idea.

It seems very generous of you to take on a road bandit. But why not if he’s harmless and has some skills.

    Why not help good people.

Post a lot of videos from your adventurous journey.

    Vance
